Simon Burder searches in his work for a sense of place. He is drawn to locations that are marked by human activity and looks for contrasts of shape, light, colour and texture to establish a dynamic structure in his drawings and prints.
Often working in series from the same location, the drawings may evolve into panoramic or multi-perspective lithographs that frequently explore the recurring theme of movement or journeying, arriving and departing.
Lithography is Simon’s preferred printmaking medium, a technique which depends on the chemical opposition of grease and water to print an image from the surface of limestone. It encourages both immediacy of drawing and deliberation through process. He feels his subjects have a close affinity with the lithographic stone, which itself derives from the landscape.
