As a teenager working on a Hampshire farm, Martin began a lifetime fascination with traditional rural, industrial and coastal subjects, filling sketchbooks with detailed graphite and watercolour observations for his Illustration and Printmaking studies at Winchester Art School. Nowadays, his sketchbook resources and memories have become key starting points for his printmaking, using either etching, aquatint, drypoint or lithographic techniques for creative outlets. Renderings of textures, erosion, atmospherics and design considerations have always been important.
Exploring ‘off the beaten track’ locations have led to discovering interesting subjects such as aged industrial sites or abandoned farm buildings. Martin’s prints have evolved from sources drawn today or years previously, becoming historical records as well as stunning artworks.
